The Moosomin Food Share goes by Food Banks Canada's Guidelines for Distributing Food Past the Best Before Date.
This means, generally our clients will receive food products that are past the best before date that is identified on the food item by the manufacturer. For all canned food items, they could be distributed up to one year past the best before date.
Best before dates that are identified by manufacturers are guaranteed of the best quality. This is not an indicator of food safety. We will continue to check all food items that come into the building for any indication of food spoilage.
Food items that have an expiry date which is different than the best before date, will not be put out in the hampers. Such items include baby formula and baby food. Expiry date labels are about nutritional quality. Neither is about food safety.
